The first monkey in space: the squirrel monkey

The Green World Biodiversity Exploration Center recently welcomed two incredibly lively and adorable squirrel monkeys. Their small and agile appearance is just like a squirrel's. In their world, women hold a leading position!

Squirrel monkeys have the most varied vocalizations among primates, and even more interestingly, they were the first monkeys in history to go into space! On May 28, 1959, two special passengers were on board the spacecraft launched by the Jupiter AM-18 rocket: the squirrel monkey "Baker" and the macaque "Aber," thus beginning the pioneering journey of experimental monkeys into space.
